A garden you can dine in

M9 Design Studio’s Sunrise Garden will change how you see space, nature and your next meal

BY

In Bengaluru, surrounded by the city’s hum and industrial buzz, something unexpected blooms — a garden, not just of foliage but of ideas. Designed by Nischal Abhaykumar, Founder of M9 Design Studio, Sunrise Garden dares to ask: What if you stumbled upon paradise in the middle of everyday chaos? Here, koi fish glide beneath staircases, birds nest in ceiling beams and greenery doesn’t just decorate the space, it defines it.

Every inch of the space, from al fresco courtyards to double-height bars draped in plants has been sculpted to dissolve the divide between indoors and outdoors.

Koi fish and daylight in motion

Once a shell tucked behind industrial facades, the alfresco dining area at Sunrise Garden has undergone a radical transformation emerging as the green, breathing heart of the restaurant.

Structural interventions played a key role in carving out this expansive oasis, where boundaries were dissolved and the outdoors pulled in with deliberate, expressive intent. Now, it’s less a dining area and more a garden in motion.

Bamboo planters line the terrace, creepers trail from overhead beams and foliage bursts from every surface. Birds nest casually in the rafters. Sunbirds and sparrows flit between tables like regulars. Koi fish glide lazily through the water body that anchors the central courtyard. It’s a space where nature is in democracy and everything feels alive. And then there’s the daylight. The morning brings a soft, golden haze. By afternoon, the shadows sharpens, rolling across stone and wood. Come sunset, the entire space shifts as the light changes and folds in like fabric while the space is washed in amber.

Where every floor has a mood

Originally part of an older structure, this restaurant has undergone a quiet metamorphosis. Reimagining the space allowed the design team to carve out vertical volumes and with that came four distinct levels, each visually distinct and intriguing.

But this isn’t a space you can take in all at once. You have to wander the corners and follow the light to begin to grasp the full scale of it. One moment you’re in a tranquil, blue-washed alcove with brass accents and plush leather, the next you’re surrounded by a riot of green spilling out of planters, climbing walls and softening concrete edges. And when you think you’ve mapped all the moods, you meet with a burst of peachy pink that’s edgy and playful. The building doesn’t separate itself from nature, it’s intertwined with it and every corner holds a pocket of green.

When nature takes the reins

One step into Sunrise Garden and you’ll realise the garden didn’t just stay outside, it’s everywhere. Hanging plants cascade like green chandeliers, creeping vines find their way up walls and windows open up to the breeze, making sure nature isn’t confined to the outside world. At the heart of it all is a reimagining. What was once an industrial shell now pulses with warmth, softness and soul.

M9 Design Studio didn’t just redesign the space, they redefined it. With their focus on innovation and sustainability, turning the space into a living, breathing experience where nature and design coexist beautifully.
