Though Mocha Mousse is Pantone’s 2025 colour of the year, this home in Mumbai revels in its own vocabulary that reminds one of coffee and more coffee. A rather fun but surprising visual, contrary to the ordinary assumptions of neutrals being monotonous, this 3,800 sq ft home displays a medley of textures and curves posing against an alluring coffee-hued backdrop.
Realised by principal architects and co-founders Rinki and Mihir Kotak of their firm 4th Dimension, it’s an ode to the wabi-sabi philosophy that embraces imperfections. The homeowner is an avid coffee enthusiast, which led to a house reflecting their love for coffee. “The design language reflects this personal connection, with rich espresso shades unifying the flooring, wall panels, furniture, and art pieces,” says Rinki. Could there be a name more fitting than Espresso Elegance for this playful abode?

What adds to this canvas is also a twist of curving and fun elements borrowed from the Japandi theme of ‘fold and unfold’. Sand and maple hues dress the walls, weaving a soothing background in each space. These natural backdrops stand behind an odyssey of curving grey and milk-toned furniture that evokes feelings of warmth.
“The curves, prevalent in nature, are soothing to the eye and heart, fostering an instant connection with the environment,” adds Rinki, who brought the space to life alongside members of the design team Irfan Khan and Rahul Rathod. It’s truly an ode to biophilic design, with a soothing twist of Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics, emphasising echoes of quaintness in the home. The simplicity is underscored in the furniture as well as the solid stone textured walls.
Beyond the curves
A lavish yet cosy living room greets you upon entrance. A visual feast of coffee-like hues is on display, right from the Italian furniture by brands like Rugiano and B&B Italia, to the alluring walls. Plush, imperfect forms envelop the space and encapsulate the true essence of wabi-sabi design.
This leads into the passageway that guides you into the kitchen by Häcker Kitchens India. The dining area features cosy Tacchini and Porada furniture draped in water-based coatings from ICA. The best part? It’s paired with a breakfast counter overlooking a breathtaking view of the city. And of course, it’s accompanied by a powder washroom with water–saving fittings by Hansgrohe and Axor. The private master suite and children’s bedrooms have their very own walk-in wardrobes and washrooms.
A riot of neutrals
“Unique characteristics and a nuanced design language are defined through false ceilings and wall panelling, with each room dictating a dramatic scene through its walls,” says Rinki. The neutral tones truly dictate the way in this space, each element posing its own identity while harmoniously merging with the other. It’s a fluid creation of elements transforming into interconnected spaces.
Embedded with paradisal textures from curved walls and solid stone installations to lime-based plaster, this home is an entrancing retreat for the coffee-loving family to come home to!
