Where we’d rather be in Kolkata

All the reasons why you must catch a stay at JW Marriott Kolkata

Haste. This expression is barely visible in the urban folds of Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal. What is visible though is the feeling of a continued sense of repose, especially in the elevated pockets of the city like JW Marriott Kolkata. Where the rooms are capacious enough, complemented with panoramic views of the metro, the rest of the hotel hosts four dining destinations, each with its own singular appeal — from their Asian culinary-inspired restaurant Vintage Asia to 2:fifty9 The Bar, one of the buzziest yet sophisticated places here that in fact remains open till 3 am for the night hawks!

Bypass Gaze

Kolkata’s JW Marriott seems to master the art of maintaining the gaze. Wrapped in a diagrid lattice structure, the glass entrance seems to take inspiration from honeycomb and palm fronds, projecting an easy, natural look, allowing light to pass through the facade, in and out.

The building  crowns itself with a pair of rooftop pools. One located in a secondary rise, stacked further and the other forming a snake-like promenade into the night offering a view that lingers long after sunset.

Inside, a grand staircase ascends indefinitely from the base of a circular floor inlay. This is what precedes the main lobby and further emerges into a space dominated by a series of connected rings suspended in the air, read as jewellery afloat. Below this, plush seating is arranged with a sense of ease and purpose. No wonder this is one of the most popular spots for a photograph in this hotel.

The Bengal table

Here, every element is geared towards getting the visitor to the city. With 281 rooms and 21 suites, it is art and decoration that narrates the experience. Paisley-based motifs adorn the artwork hung above beds, inspired by kalka and boteh motifs, reminiscent of Jamdani textiles and Alpona floor paintings.

While the rooms promise restful sleep, it’s the restaurants that keep Kolkata coming back. While the JW Kitchen, renowned for hosting the biggest Sunday Brunch in the city, serves all day long, mastery in Cantonese dining reveals itself at Vintage Asia under Chef Dirham Haque. The Infinity Pool Bar is also a hotspot for a view of the Kolkata skyline and JW Bakery is home to Executive Pastry Chef Bhaskar Chakraborty’s craft of artisan bread, handcrafted chocolates and scrumptious pastries.

City sanctum

Integrating these elements, the JW Marriott Hotel Kolkata flows effortlessly from rest to wellness to celebration. There’s the award-winning Spa by JW, state-of-the-art fitness center, as well as the largest ballrooms in Kolkata occupying a space of 38,750 sq ft alongside  indoor-outdoor event spaces, which are home to the city’s most spectacular weddings and events. It is not just a hotel where people stay , it is a haven where people gather, rest and celebrate.
