Herman Miller and Studio 7.5 take a sustainable step

Herman Miller reduces the carbon footprint of its performance seating with updated Mirra 2 Chair and Stool

Herman Miller and Berlin-based Studio 7.5 have revisited the Mirra 2 Chair and Stool, reducing the design’s carbon footprint by rethinking how every element could be more sustainably made. The refreshed design leans into material innovations while furthering the chair’s performance-enhancing technologies and expanding its styling options. The result is a new Mirra 2 that is physically lighter and gentler on the environment. Since its debut, Mirra 2 has steadily advanced towards becoming Herman Miller’s most sustainable performance seating design. In the early 2000s, Herman Miller partnered with global environmental experts MBDC, creators of the Cradle to Cradle Certified Programme, the global benchmark for products that are safe, circular and responsibly made to establish ‘Design for the Environment’ protocols. These principles guided the development of the original Mirra.

A decade later, the design saw its first major update. Introduced in 2013, Mirra 2 focused on dematerialisation, making the chair 30 percent lighter than its predecessor. Now, the latest iteration builds on that foundation, incorporating significantly more recycled content and reducing the chair’s carbon footprint by up to 17 percent compared to the previous version. The chair’s nylon base and spine are now made entirely from recycled material. The carbon footprint reduction across the updated Mirra 2 portfolio is expected to match the greenhouse gas emissions from driving 4.7 million miles in a typical petrol-powered car or the energy required to charge 121 million smartphones and keep them powered for a full day.

Named for its ability to mirror the user’s movements, Mirra 2 offers immediate comfort and intuitive personalisation through dynamic surfaces that respond to even the slightest shift. Its suite of advanced ergonomic technologies includes:

AireWeave Suspension and FlexFront: adapt to movement and remain temperature-neutral, preventing heat build-up

Loop Spine: allows natural torsional movement for reaching and stretching

PostureFit: patented sacral support that encourages proper posture and prevents slouching

Harmonic 2 Tilt: delivers balanced support across the full range of recline

Available in two backrest styles, Mirra 2 suits a wide range of environments. The Butterfly Back is a fabric-covered structure with polymer veins, offering zoned support and eliminating pressure points. The TriFlex option, made entirely of polymer, features three ergonomic zones and is ideal for high-traffic commercial settings. A fresh colour palette introduces rich tones such as cordovan, ultramarine, olive, ochre and alpine. Statement styling options include bold colour blocking, component mixing, and neutral bases punctuated with vibrant accents. Monochrome options are also offered in alpine or graphite finishes.

Since first designing the Mirra Chair, Carola Zwick, Burkhard Schmitz and Roland Zwick of Studio 7.5 have twice returned to refine the concept. “For us, improving a design continuously is key to longevity,” say the designers. “It’s about finding lower-impact materials and enhancing an existing concept, rather than chasing something new. That reassures existing users and makes the design more sustainable. Slowing down and resisting the ‘new new’ is an essential part of sustainability.”

“Sustainability has been a guiding principle at Herman Miller for decades,” says Gabe Wing, Vice President of Sustainability at MillerKnoll. “In collaboration with Studio 7.5, we identified growing demand for chairs like Mirra 2—those that offer near-instant comfort and minimal adjustments, making them ideal for shared or flexible workspaces. Increasing recycled content while boosting performance sets a new standard in ergonomic design.”

Herman Miller and Studio 7.5 continue to collaborate on award-winning seating collections, including Mirra 2, Setu, Zeph and Cosm. Setu was recently updated with Intercept suspension (also used in the Cosm Chair), a new bumper for added durability, and new colour options. Weighing just 18 pounds, Setu is designed with sustainability in mind — over 50 percent recycled content and up to 90 percent recyclability, depending on available recycling facilities.

The updated Mirra 2 is now available for contract customers through Herman Miller and MillerKnoll dealers.
