Spotlighting the makers

Cocoon Fine Rugs weaves heritage for the LVMH Métiers d’Art Paris office

BY

What sets luxury apart from the ordinary? More than labels or superior materiality, it all comes down to what the French call La Main — or the hand. This phrase is a fitting name for the LVMH Métiers d’Art office in Paris, an organisation that brings together the finest manufacturers, suppliers and craftsmen in the world under one roof. Their goal? Opening the world of superior craftsmanship up for all to see, connecting those who cherish luxury to the ones who sculpt it with their own hands.

The striking office sprawls across approximately 8,300 sq ft in Paris’ 2nd Arrondissement. Set in a heritage space brought to life by Clément Lesnoff-Rocard, it has been furnished in collaboration with Cocoon Fine Rugs, an Indian design powerhouse founded by Ayush and Smriti Choudhary. Their hand-knotted creations, much like LVMH Métiers d’Art, straddle innovation and tradition.

WEAVING A LEGACY

La Main’s spatial narrative leans towards austere neutrals, paring back to let its storied structure and the occasional pop of crimson occupy centre stage. Hints of its mission peek through on each floor of its five-storey structure: right from the sprawling ground floor that recreates the textured crevices of leather, to smaller, more intimate workshops where all who walk in can see the magic unfold. Amidst its craft-driven interiors, Cocoon Fine Rugs’ creations add tactility, intervening to create the occasion’s rounded pool of warmth.

As Smriti Choudhary, Brand Director of Cocoon Fine Rugs, affirms, “Each rug, much like the craftsmanship found in La Main, carries the imprint of the skilled hands that bring it to life. It is an intersection of tradition and contemporary design, woven to inspire creativity in a space dedicated to innovation.”

DRIVEN BY HERITAGE AND MATERIALITY

One would not be amiss in claiming that these hand-woven creations are heirlooms in their own right. And how could they not be? Each rug in the office has been crafted from the finest silk and wool, painstakingly hand-woven by skilled artisans. They are an extension of La Main’s mission, bridging the long-renowned tradition of hand-woven carpets with a contemporary design language that belongs wholeheartedly to the 21st century.

As the eager public, industry stalwarts and craftsmen at La Main learn, explore and create under the same roof, these rugs echo the same goal that unites them all: a deep, abiding love for all things craft — and a drive to keep their heritage alive.
