Checkmate, Repeat!

Checks are everywhere. Here's how to bring it home

Carefree and calculated, the checkerboard pattern’s reign has journeyed fashion, architecture and interiors. From ancient Indian board games and period-style floors to desi charpais and the summery flair of gamchas, lungis and Madras Checks; the grid-forward graphic asks you to play with contrast, scale and repetition.

The Features

Indian charpai comes home, as form and inspiration. The logic of weave, colours and rhythm takes the front seat in form of a multifunctional seating and shelving from the Kasera collection by KAASH, crafted as a collaboration between David Joe Thomas and the tape basket and cane furniture weavers. Look once or countless times, its hypnotic flat graphic visual speaks louder, thanks to the half-inch plastic tape technique used as a repetitive unit.

Gingham has long been a classic favourite in kitchens around the world as tablecloths, aprons and curtains. But what happens when
it becomes the kitchen itself? MuseLAB illustrates this visual inside a kitchen of a home in Mumbai. A green Lake Placid quartzite monolithic island is framed by recurring snippets of gingham; sewn together with a chequered inlay skirt at its base, patterns on the backsplash and window mullions, trickling down to the flooring where a neat grid mimics a woven carpet. Glance up and notice a rather witty installation of a Shoji-inspired lighting, yet again, emphasising the milky white and pale green-washed kitchen’s geometric symmetry.
