Clues of surrealism in Delhi

Pop art and personality thrive in this home by Attico Homes

BY

Paint your mind! In this Delhi farmhouse, a sort of surrealist automatism seems to take over. The 7,500 sq ft indoors reflect an expressionist temperament that never flinches from the flairs and the ohs! of living. Did pigment call out structure, or did structure pull colour into existence? The question loops endlessly, spinning you into a reverie, where art dictates instead of mere decoration. What emerges then is a home by Attico Homes with volume and a loop of craft in every frame.

The client envisioned a youthful and vibrant space, where every room would have its own distinct design story and colour palette” — the brief was deceptively simple. The sprawling layout signals the freedom of space in tandem with an art connoisseur’s whimsy. Interpreting it, Principal Designers Parnika Julka and Harshil Kapur of Attico Homes, embroider a home where overhead ceilings bear the craftsmanship of Jaipur, while elsewhere, a swing aligns with vastu.

"We drew significant inspiration from the artistry of Indian craftsmen. The family lounge has a lively, colourful vibe, featuring custom artwork commissioned especially for the couple to reflect their lifestyle"

Spatial doppelgangers

As the entryway sets the tone in grey, its surface comes alive in floral engravings by master artisans from Jaipur. Below, brass inserts glint through the floor inlay, extending into the geometric doors that pull you inside the informal lounge — less a room, more a gallery of symmetry and patterns.

Inside, the lounge, described by Parnika and Harshil as the space they most enjoyed designing — is anchored by a vibrant bar and framed by expansive windows, hosting an eclectic alignment of furniture. A symmetry of two tables, two couches and two lounge chairs, all in unconventional silhouettes, fabric pairings and playful centre tables. “We experimented with unconventional sofa shapes, exquisite fabric combinations and quirky centre tables, stepping away from traditional rectangular forms to inject a fun element into the space.” confirms the designers.

Pop, on tap

The bar deserves a moment of its own. It is a sandwich of details, indulgent but not overwhelming. Drenched in terracotta red, the structure is adorned with metal railing, stone and black motifs that seemingly wrap themselves around the bar in graphic design fashion. The colours come alive through a collection of complementary high chairs that boast metallic exteriors, alongside plush blue seating that sports floral designs, much like the unbridled imagination that can be offered through an artistic couple that makes this space their own.

The pièce de résistance, however, is a pop art on the wall. A painting that shuns traditional portraits of larger-than-life figures and. Instead, it brings a collection of pop culture icons to a single canvas, distilling self expression.

Beyond the informal lounge, one gets to see the open balcony grounded in checks and a swing that justifies the home’s vastu belief of not placing furniture on the floor. What results is a mesmeric zone with a table that rests on stones and a chandelier with a swing to it!

From salon bedroom

The formal lounge takes on a more regal demeanour. Wainscoting blooms into floral motifs, while a salmon pink couch in  gilded detailing ground the room in opulence. True to its name, the space reads in chandeliers and extravagant night lamps. The adjoining dining area where a table wears the fractured visage of cracked marble, the space comes together under two chandeliers. Such an exquisite setting recalls the refinement of a French salon, while paying homage to the owners’ roots through a framed deity painting in the centre.

In the bedroom, a curved headboard gently cocoons the sleeper, helping the transition into a peaceful slumber. The grey hue and marble continue the visual dialogue while chandeliers overhead reinforces the homeowner’s fondness for drama. Overall, the farmhouse is a culmination of the occupant’s creative splatter of design.
