Having guests over? For a change why not shift the party to the balcony or verandah. For that you need to create a warm inviting terrace – take inspiration from this verandah in interior architect Gunther Maria Norrenberg’s self-designed 17th century old haveli in Udaipur.

If you are looking to recreate a similar setup, start with pristine marble or stone flooring. Settle on a point of focus that overlooks the choicest view and opt for inbuilt seating and statement thrones in regal antique finish. For a royal durbar like ambience – and if you love drama – you can have carved pillars and elevated platforms.

Finishing touches can include upholstery and cushions in clashing rainbow colours. To further complement the setting accessorise with bejewelled or metallic objets d’art, oil paintings or wall hangings. You can also add embroidered or muted drapes to the ceiling and a low centre wooden table to support fresh flowers and light refreshments.

Gunther’s tips for an outdoor living room

  1. Treat it just like you would an indoor area. Choose the position of your seating with the view or the point of focus in mind.
  2. Elevated floor or even walls will give it a grandiose and welcoming aura, like a stage.
  3. Select your accents like tables, cushions and paintings wisely. Ensure they are weatherproofed without hindering their look.
