Ripple Effect: At Taw’Wiz, Vaishali Shadangule presents her sustainable collections of wearable and functional art

Perhaps it is only poetically fitting to host a display of sustainably crafted functional art in a repurposed warehouse. For EDIDA India winner, designer Vaishali Shadangule, environmental responsibility forms the very foundation of her philosophy.
She states, “It has always been my way of life, just as we practise in villages: you don’t throw anything, you repurpose all, you are respectful of nature and responsible for the whole community.”
Drawing parallels with the enchanted amulets or Ta’wiz, the Taw’Wiz showcase too celebrates the mystical yet benevolent forces of nature. Against the industrial yet modern backdrop of Tranceform Designs in South Mumbai, the mindful sensibility of climate consciousness is revered in her collections, from wearable art to an exquisite line of explorations in textiles to the metal.
“While working on my last collection I noticed that leftovers from different weaves from different villages and states of India were lying mixed together,” states Vaishali. “I decided to make a collection with all of them, symbolising that sustainability must be above everything, a sort of unity in diversity,” she stresses.
Throughout her life, the natural world has always inspired her and it is abundantly visible in her vivacious artistry and the sculptural forms. “You will never see a garment of mine simple and flat!” jokes Vaishali. She brings the same self-expression into her home decor collection as it blooms with life, narrating tales of artful metamorphosis and thoughtful living.
