A functional and minimal design for a home is no less of an artistic conquest. Overcoming the challenge, this 2,350 sq ft home in Mumbai crafted by Ashni Tapuriah Shah and Sanna Daya Hasan, co-founders at TCG Studio is a spectacular contemporary piece of art. Snug and inviting, the home epitomises comfortable living with a touch of the family’s personal stories.

“By virtue of being located on the 33rd floor, the house gets a good amount of natural light. We capitalised on this aspect when curating the finishes and designing the flow of the space.” explains Ashni. Translucent materials, subtle wall textures and warm colour tones amplify the natural light entering. The result? A home that’s bright, airy and uninterrupted.

Rooted in simplicity

Sober shades, clean lines and soft curves set the tone for a simple yet eclectic way of living. “The palette that defines the visual language consists of honey oak wooden flooring, dark ebonized open grain veneer, neutral coloured boucles, travertine and onyx marble for key furniture pieces and custom created fabric sandwiched glass that lends a very ethereal quality to the space.” shares the designer.

Touring the spaces

The home extends a warm welcome with an expansive living space bedecked with a double-sided swing, cosy sofa and seating along the window. Stealing the spotlight is a pair of organic-shaped travertine marble coffee tables, set on top of a beige rug.

Upon sliding the concealable panels on one side, the multifunctional den is revealed. Flaunting organic, curved forms within the furniture design, the space is equipped to transform as needed; a TV for leisure time as a family or even a hidden bar to kick back and enjoy a drink. The dining area, on the other side of the living space, is a cosy nook with a white marble dining table, paired with a bench and minimal wall lights offering an intimate and moody ambience.

Defined by the brief, the master bedroom is a coalescence between form and function on a backdrop of a muted monochromatic palette. The timelessness and regality of the space is manifested through a tall headboard paired with oval-shaped nightstands on one end and a curved seat by the window on the other. You are greeted with a perfect composition of varied textures, dressed in neutrals in the daughters’ bedrooms. A subtle yet striking detail, in one of the bedrooms is the headboard that extends and turns to form a seat beside the window.

A harmonious curation of these contemporary elements make the home comforting and inviting. While maintaining the minimalistic and multifunctional aspects of the brief, the home successfully inhibits an artistic quality within the space. Perhaps, becoming a blueprint for a modest yet exquisite interior design.
