From the Big Apple to Mumbai with love: A New York penthouse-inspired duplex by Jason Wadhwani Designs is an artistic treasure

A bite of the Big Apple for design inspiration a day certainly keeps monotony away! One concrete jungle plays the muse for another, as Jason Wadhwani designs a 5,500 sq ft Mumbai duplex echoing a New York penthouse.

Collectible furniture pieces and decor strike a pose against the city’s skyline, peering in through the expansive windows. The homeowners’ love for art was one they’d often share with Jason, introducing the principal designer to new artists. As a result, their passion for art is one of the cornerstones of the home’s design. The understated colour palette makes space for their curated creations to bloom, as the home provides an unmistakably urban interpretation of luxury.  

Empire state of mind 

Practically a candy store for design and art aficionados, multiple statement pieces exist in harmony with each other within the home. A mish-mash of textures, motifs and shapes decorate the interiors — curves against sharp angles, natural textures flanking man-made art.

Like a jack-in-the-box lurking around the corner, the space’s twists and turns reveal multiple surprises. Eclectic lighting fixtures and pause-worthy canvases are par for the course. Some of the pieces, such as the whimsical bunker bed in the children’s bedroom, have been conceptualised and created by Jason himself. Nature plays the artist too, with marble reminiscent of an acrylic pour painting wrapping the bathrooms in a mesmerising display. Right from the striking foyer to the bedrooms, the space is a visual treat perched high above the city’s skyline with an eagle eye for art.

A Metropolitan montage 

How many statement pieces are too many? When it comes to this duplex, the limit does not exist. A pair of Art Deco-inspired doors greet visitors at the onset, the space crowned by a striking chandelier. The diverse range of silhouettes and patterns are a precursor to what awaits within.

Bid hello to Mumbai’s skyline in the living space, as the abode perches on the 53rd and 54th floor of a dizzying high-rise. A Bauhaus-inspired artwork by Arun Dev decorates the walls of the living space, whilst a hot balloon-esque pendant light suspends over the beige sofas. As you walk away from this merry group, another flock of plush seaters await close by — accompanied by iridescent side tables and striped settees.

Objects in the dining space may appear closer than they are, especially when looking into the striking pendant lights. An array of acrylic boxes with paper-cut art decorate the wall, part of a glorious whole conceptualised by Neelesh Yogi. The pared-back colour palette allows little colour to occupy centre stage, but all that changes within the master and kids’ bedroom, as well as the playroom.

A riot of neutrals within the master bedroom directs eyes to the colourful artwork by Vanita Sethi decorating the wall. But it is the sight of the children’s bedroom that is certain to make any visitor wish they were six again — owing to the plush bunk bed replete with beaded railings. The bare walls surrender to a bucolic wallpaper depicting lush tropics within the playroom. The accent colour within this space switches from blue to minty green, with dollops of neutrals that tie the entire home together.

Material matters 

The abode has a penchant for muted pops of colour. Amid a sea of neutrals, an occasional blue, orange or green accent makes a striking appearance. Herringbone flooring, white walls, wood and occasional panels of marble make for classic accompaniments to an array of unconventional silhouettes.
