CLOCKWISE, FROM LEFT Last year’s winners: Kvik shelf by Harpreet Padam and Lavanya Asthana; Iktar stool by Sujay Das; Good Luck Irani Cafe wall plates by Nida Mahmood; NYPD Roadblock bench by Ishan Khosla; Retyrement Plan furniture by Anu Tandon Vieira; Pebble chair by Sahil & Sarthak; String table by Saif Faisal; Rooshad Shroff, another winner with his creation Chair 01.

When it comes to design, India is a country of contrasts – there’s burgeoning talent, but so is a dearth of opportunities. Godrej Design Lab, in association with ELLE DECOR India, hopes to nullify that by challenging the next generation to envision the furniture of the future. “This competition will give young designers the confidence to create, by guiding them through the right path of product development,” asserts our Editor-in-Chief, Pramiti Madhavji. “It is going to be the starting point for many new designers; it will bring to the society newer creations from relatively unknown names.”
In its launch year 2014, out of hundreds of entries, eight were selected to be mentored by Godrej Interio. They in turn, fine-tuned and produced prototypes of the winning concepts, giving them the platform to showcase at India Design ID 2015.
What are the judges looking for this year? “We hope to see some strong new voices emerging and a new point-of-view on the modern Indian design aesthetic. We’d like to see designers being more ambitious with their ideas and experimenting with new kinds of materials,” says Navroze Godrej, Executive Director, Strategy & Innovation, Godrej & Boyce. “The products have to club innovation with practicality and functionality,” adds Pramiti. “One without the other doesn’t work.”
