#EDEarthHero: A solar bike path inspired by a famous Van Gogh painting

APR 21, 2016 | By Aditi Sharma Maheshwari
A famous artwork comes alive and becomes a popular local attraction…this isn’t a set-up for a sci-fi or fantasy movie. To propagate the importance of safe and smart roads in his hometown, Dutch creative Daan Roosegaarde influenced by Vincent van Gogh’s famous work Starry Night, designed a bicycle path that glows in the dark.
In the province of Noord Brabant in south Netherlands, the art inspired location with 1,000 LEDs powered by solar panels, along with a light reflecting paint developed by infrastructure firm Heijmans, generates a stunning night sky-like display on the ground. Connecting cultural history with technology, Daan believes the project is like “techno poetry” and something that creates a special place in the hearts of those who experience it. The trail connects the painter’s heritage locations of where he was born and raised and it is open round the year for locals, free of charge.
