What’s the closest you can get to making an office not feel like one? To make it inspire awe and be audacious; embody richness but carry an unadulterated rawness; be sumptuous yet soothing? Studio Reve  crafted this 1,500 sq ft workplace in Chennai, Tamil Nadu to master this mirage. They wanted the space to incite work the likes of a creative studio without compromising on functionality — and the function’s been fulfilled and how!

Principal designers Amita Joy and Hariti Aditya have designed the space to sit at the juncture of contemporary, traditional and natural components. Every piece of furniture conveys a distinct design story that only builds upon the larger non-comforming, non-traditional way of work at the office. The pieces are tactile and tenacious in the awe they incite. The open layout ensures that the space is utilised to look and feel even bigger than it actually is.

A subtle palette defines the background against which these vivaciously designed furniture and furnishings are placed. The blood-red entrance foyer takes one right into this design choice, with a crimson console placed against the grey. On the other side of the foyer is a dynamic open space befitted with rattan chairs and a darker grey work table for the employees.

With the conference room on one side and the managing director’s cabin on the other, the lounge area balances the slate with its fun temperament and even cosier seating – wooden chairs outfield with vivid colours and patterns.

The conference space feels grounding. The expanse of the dark wooden table against the deep carpet, with the black polished chairs upholstered in geometric prints is a hub for brainstorming. Unlike the other spaces, the MD’s cabin steers the balance more towards calm with the makings of imperative decisions.

One of our favourite elements is the ergonomic bench against the grey branded wall.

Modern yet not minimalist is probably the best way to describe the space. The colours are nuanced and subtle, with traces of bold hues that add exuberance. “We paired contemporary furniture with ornate pieces to maintain the balance throughout. The modern light fixtures were a perfect addition to the final look we were trying to achieve,” says Amita about the decision to mix temperaments for that perfect balanced atmosphere.

No space in the office is bereft of inspiration. It’s vibrant and more than viable to foster creativity. And if we say so ourselves, an office we definitely wouldn’t mind working out of!
