The enticing appeal of the English style decor saved the day for Founding Partners of Aum Architects, Manish Dikshit, Nachiket Borawake and Sonali Pandit.

When an eclectic Mumbai family approached them for their 2,085 sq ft residence, their diverse personalities seemed to agree on nothing but a common love for crafted wooden furniture, decorative wallpapers and pleasing colours and accents. Infusing the ornamental essence of English decor with judicious doses of character is the elaborate ‘Hampton Residence’.

The curious brief

While the communal spaces of the home weave a classical English theme, the private zones are tailored to reflect the inhabitant’s diverse decor tastes. “A thoughtful curation of spaces captures the essence of each while making them functional, fluid and idiosyncratic” reveals Manish.

Tour every turn of the home

The home opens with an intricately hand-crafted grey marble flooring leading to the expansive communal space encompassing the entrance foyer, formal living room, dining area and open kitchen. Beige and ivory upholstery along with custom lamp shades offer a muted contrast to the voluptuous set of English-themed furniture.

The formal living room and the dining area form a linear volume offset by the kitchen. Finished in matte white PU, the modern kitchen houses an overhead storage with a 24-carat gold coating and tinted glass profile shutters. An antique floor lamp combined with leatherette-covered niches doubles up as a focal point by the island breakfast counter.

The rooms are designed to extend a glimpse into the personalities of the owners. For example, the son’s room is crafted with minimalism in mind, a striking contrast to the theme of the home. Its bottle green display wardrobe presents a pleasant pop of colour against the blue and grey hues of the room.

The daughter’s room on the other hand, speaks of delicacy and feminine hints through its Anglo-Indian classical elements. Covered in a palette of duck egg blue and white, the room houses decorative custom-made furniture.

Functionality, flamboyance and exuberance dictate the design strategy for the primary bedroom. True to the classical theme, an alluring wallpaper, impeccable white flooring with a subtle inlay, teakwood furniture and arched mouldings compose the bedroom aesthetics.

Disclosing the opulent flair of the space, the extended walk-in closet features a marble backsplash with gold-accents and wardrobes with hand-made glass handles.

Ideas to bookmark – colours and materials

While the moodboard of the home is English classical decor, the colour and material palette resonate with the individual tastes of the inhabitants. Several permutations and combinations of furniture and furnishing styles sprinkled with golden accents render a timeless appeal to the traditional theme.

What Aum Architects fell in love with…

The fusion of interiors and personality proposed an exciting challenge for the firm. Several discussions revolving around either merging or breaking away from the theme palette led to an authentic translation of aesthetic preferences.

“Bringing out the essence of old classics was a thrilling and an enriching experience, as it allowed us to explore and experiment with a plethora of materials and design elements. The design of the residence came out to be as unique as the individuals and thus became one of our celebrated projects,” concludes Manish.
