If you’re a pet parent, the desire to have a home that’s equal parts yours and theirs is nothing out of the ordinary. The story of “Frenchie Haus”, a 1,650 sq ft home for a couple in Mumbai, designed by Kumpal Vaid, founder at Purple Backyard, is a spectacular artistic manifestation of the same.

“As a young, vibrant couple in their early 30s, one of their key concerns was creating a space that would be stylish and functional for their two beloved French Bulldogs. They wanted a home that catered to their pets while still reflecting their style.” Kumpal shares.

Trends with a twist

While incorporating current trends, the homeowners stories and personalities are silently woven into the eclectic elements of the space. From colour-blocking in the kitchen and to an illustrious ceiling wallpaper for the master bedroom, bold design choices envelope every nook and corner of the home. Uninhibited from sticking by a singular style for the space, the design coalesces contrasting tones, materials and shapes.

Decoding the details

In a series of discoveries, a 259-coded Morse wall in the living room featuring the couple’s milestone dates and important names is the most striking element, appearing to be straight out of an art gallery. “The dynamic interplay of textures and shapes in this area brings the space to life, especially with the distinct seats—one from Loop and Link and the other with a playful Cactus print—that symbolise the couple’s synergy.” adds Kumpal

‘Mastering’ an asymmetric composition of elements, the master bedroom features nonidentical monochromatic nightstands paired with an organic-shaped headboard. The master bathroom is adorned with a marble Panda artefact, kitkat tiles and handcrafted marble sit-out.

It’s Paw-Haus

Ensuring that the dogs’ needs are met while the home stays stylish, easy-to-maintain and comfortable was the primary challenge for the designers. “We integrated durable materials and finishes that could withstand the wear and tear of pets without compromising on aesthetics.” Kumpal explains.

An open and spacious layout of the living room offers space for restraint-free movement. Opting for furniture with clean lines and pet-friendly fabrics helps with easy maintenance. Throughout the home, the flooring selection doesn’t compromise on its bold visual appeal while being sturdy, catering to the playful dogs. A mindful elevation of plants in the outdoor spaces not only adds visual contrast but keeps them out of the pets’ reach.
