    ‘संतति | Mahatma Gandhi Then. Now. Next’: Lavina Baldota and NGMA honour the sesquicentennial birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation

    The National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai is all set to host ‘एक संतति | Mahatma Gandhi Then. Now. Next’—a mega arts and culture exhibition starting on the sesquicentennial birth anniversary of the Father of our Nation. The exhibition is conceived by Lavina Baldota—the granddaughter of Shri Abheraj Baldota, who was a freedom fighter associated with Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

    Creative minds such as Jean-Francois Lesage, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Klove Studio, Ashiesh Shah, amongst others will pay tribute to the father of the nation through interpretations of Gandhian philosophy.Since childhood, khadi—part of the Swadeshi movement led by Gandhi—piqued Baldota’s interest in textile and clothing designs using the material She envisions taking khadi from being an important tool of the past to a relevant necessity in the present to a sought after luxury of the future. The showcase will commence on a multi-city tour to acclaimed art museums and galleries to inspire audiences by the finest interface of Indian art and Indian craft through the renditions by select creative minds from various genres across the country.

    Among the display is textile designer Gaurang Shah’s interpretation of 30 landmark paintings of Raja Ravi Verma as woven visuals on the pallus of khadi saris. Prateek Jain and Gautam Seth of Klove Studio have crafted a luminary installation on “Ahimsa” using fused salt. Fashion designer Rajesh Pratap Singh’s installation on “Neel Vidroh” using Indigo focuses on “Satyagraha”. Distinguished Couturier Jean François Lesage demonstrates Gandhi’s impact, and designer extraordinaire Asheish Shah highlights “Swadeshi’ through objects created by rural artisans and using traditional techniques. The exhibit is open to the public from October 2, 2019–November 15, 2019 at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai
