House on the horizon

ADND crafts a boundary between ocean and oasis in Mumbai

BY

The perfect mix of artist and muse, this quiet neighbour of the Arabian Sea, seems forged of the blue expanse it faces. Designed by ADND, the 3,500 sq ft house features a minimalist design and a colour scheme reminiscent of its coastal company.

Making the ocean a backdrop for the family’s daily activities, principal architect Shobhan Kothari explains, “The layout was approached with a strong intent to blur the boundaries between inside and outside, ensuring each space felt visually and emotionally connected to the sea,” who completed the project with Prajakta More, Priyanka Rahate and Minal Raut. Reflecting the outside, within, this home seems to bend the boundaries of the space it sits in, welcoming the colours and movements of the sea inside.

Sand and stone

A textured concrete finish on the walls of the home adds a raw tactile edge to an otherwise lavish interior. Light wood grain cabinets in the dining room and bedrooms are reminiscent of driftwood, and mix with the light colour palette of the home, making the space feel airy, bright and welcoming. One could even say the taupe marble floors from Classic Marble that cover the home complete the immersive experience by cosplaying as light foamy seawater. Each element is one of careful design that immerses this home in a feel that’s coastal chic.

Accent splashes

Adding to the breezy and mindful designing of the space, accent art pieces amp up the splendour and elevate the seaside haunt. A cantilevered antique brass bar is visually striking with its backdrop of textured blue veneer panels, while a snaking rope-like light installation manoeuvres on the ceiling above an accent blue couch. “Controlled experimentation ensured visual calm while keeping the spaces rich in detail and layered in texture,” reveals Shobhan, allowing the space to stay true to its inspiration while blending in colours of personality. With its glints of metal within the bedroom and living spaces through light fixtures and subtle accents, this home is no seaside shack but more akin to a pearl within the ocean bed.
