An important aspect to consider, while designing workplaces, is to induce inspiration and tranquillity for increased productivity. Blissfully sensorial, the headquarters for GM Syntex in Mumbai is designed to foster a sense of calm amidst the city’s chaos. Chanya Kaur, Creative Director at The Pure Concept Home has designed this oasis with the concept of textures, reflecting the intricate and technical fabrics the textile manufacturers produce.

The 20,000 sq ft space, spread across four levels, embodies the essence of contemporary design trends featuring clean lines, functionality and minimalism all tied together with a soothing colour and material palette.

A feeling of home

Originally used as a printing plant in the late 70s and early 80s, the building for the headquarters needed reinforcement. “Two years ago, a decision was made to reinforce and reshape the building to prepare it for the next 10 to 15 years, with the goal of creating a space that feels like home, even for those who spend long hours there,” shares Chanya.

Expansive, airy and one of the largest textile design studios in the country, the studio space is designed to encourage team work while maintaining a creative flow. The meeting room features a skylight, brightening up the space with natural light for reviewing fabrics and colours. A striking addition to the office is a varied inclusion of comfortable yet aesthetically appealing office and dining chairs along with arm chairs.

Materials and more..

Raw and textural, the building’s exterior makes a statement in the neighbourhood with a limestone finish on the facade. A diverse material palette with marble, wooden parquet flooring, terrazzo tiles, sisal carpets, wallpapers, mouldings, veneers, and cork walls, transforms the interiors into a tactile haven.

Integrating a diverse range of textures and patterns on a muted colour palette, ensures an inviting environment across the space. Chanya envisioned each floor to possess an identity of its own with a distinct colour palette; warm beiges and earthy browns on the ground floor, grey tones on the first floor, dark greens on the second floor and terracotta on the rooftop.

Cabana, ooh na-na

The headquarter’s rooftop is a cabana that offers a recreational space for the team to unwind and relax. A terracotta colour palette with rich and raw textures, the space is immersed in nature, ensuring a calm and soothing ambience.

The space is designed to be a sanctuary to escape the urban rush. Triumphing in creating a home-like atmosphere, the space facilitates opportunities for deep, thoughtful work to transpire through a calm disconnect within the city.
