Encapsulating the heady rush of being on a holiday, Baxter has transformed a 20th-century villa named La Casa sul Lago near Lake Como, Italy, into a contemporary haven — much to the delight of design enthusiasts (and much to the chagrin of those who cannot experience this beauty in person, miles away). Replete with glamourous, inspired creations, rich hues of rhubarb, plum and terracotta have been paired with a few neutral tones interspersed in between. No space is sacrosanct — experimentation permeates every room within the villa.

The lush stone-colonnaded portico has been transformed into a dining area, wherein sprigs of green complement the long, sinuous lines of the furniture. Lit up by a dazzling stream of sunlight, the veranda sports a massive table made out of marble, a rhubarb-coloured carpet underneath lending a delicious contrast to its white structure. It foreshadows a hint of what awaits within — a space characterised by rich berry-esque tones and elements that are decidedly contemporary, cutting a novel figure against the heady, old-world charm of the villa.

An indulgent sensory experience unveils itself as one steps in, curated by Baxter. Hannes Peer’s new collection, punctuated with lacquered furniture crowned by plush, structural cushions, takes centre stage within the living room. The bold, bright wood panelling is a nod to Parisienne chic, as the entire space is lit up by custom Murano glass lights. A smoked glass window separates a social space from the hall, containing a kitchen with a custom stone and brass top that can be utilised as both a kitchen counter and a cocktail station, ideal for whipping up a few delicious creations.

Upstairs, hues of beige deepened with an occasional splash of tobacco reign supreme. The two-bedroom suites above brim with comfort, sporting lush beds and loungers suitable for resting upon or slumbering in. A plum-coloured bed designed by Studiopepe occupies pride of place within a suite looking over the dazzling lake.

Take a swim in the pool or lounge around atop outdoor pieces designed by Paola Navone. Break bread and indulge in a glass of wine (or two) within the adjoining terrace, characterised by shades of beige, grey and olive. A Nuage leather Miami Beach sofa nestles within the annexe higher up, sporting an exacting a housse finish. Suitable for deep reverie or the simple joys of looking at a thing of beauty, the greenhouse contains sprawling succulents and cacti that reflect the lush outdoors within. Sand-coloured raffia upholstery crawls upon the walls, as the floor is laid with natural fibre carpets. Manila rattan chairs surround a low-lying lava table.
