When one thinks of a beachside home, the first things that come to mind are the sounds of the waves crashing on the shore and birds chirping. But switch to the scenes of Mumbai, the first things one possibly thinks of are the clanging sounds of the coastal road being built along the South Mumbai stretch and the loud honking cars. But this 2,000 sq ft home overlooking the busy Chowpatty Beach imagined by Shefali Shah, Principal designer and Founder of Jazz it up Designs, has managed to transform it into a space that reminds one of a cosy beachside cottage. A true Bombay dream!
London meets Art Deco
The family of five wanted their spaces to feel warm and distant from the sterile nature of a hotel. Abundant light and tall ceilings were important to them, and so was the bare usage of glossy materials. Shefali designed the residence in a way that the kitchen was the heart of the home, owing to the fact that the family enjoys hosting friends and family regularly. Taking on a subdued colour palette yet blanketing the home in patterns, Shefali says, “The theme is a classic London home sprinkled with art deco elements.”
Styled by Deepali Pradeep, the sea-facing apartment, which was earlier split into two spaces, was designed to include a coffee area, puja room, kitchen with a pantry and three bedrooms.
Opulence meets muted
A popular term in the design dictionary right now, “cottagecore”, defines this home. While it may only be a passing trend, the team at Jazz it up Designs have carefully handpicked elements of cottagecore origin to ensure that the residence retains its timeless feel. Evoking the rural European countryside while also tying in elements of a beach cottage, this home is wrapped in a predominantly white colour palette with taupe, grey and black accents.
Over the top in all the right places, the apartment sets off with an 8 foot panelled veneer door. The ceiling boasts timber rafters which pair beautifully with the long arched windows. With the home having relatively plain walls, texture is added through upholstery fabrics and patterned flooring with tiles and tumbled marble mosaics. Almost like a carpet, in the main living spaces, are photo frame floor patterns. Glossy central tiles are bordered by a stone mosaic edge.
Vintage elements were paired with furniture pieces that had weathered characteristics. “Having distressed pieces of furniture and adding the vintage touch to a modern home is my signature style. I love doing that, and somewhere this finds its way through in all the spaces I design” expresses Shefali.
The spaces come together with their pared back palette and play of texture and materials. The mix of the old with the new brews together something unique that has taken the shape of this home.
Reflections of positivity
“My design philosophy is creating spaces that truly reflect the family’s personality, mixing colours effortlessly that don’t shout in your face and creating spaces that are easy to live with as years go by and most importantly apart from the aesthetics, emotionally the homeowners feel calm, relaxed and positive in their homes” signs off Shefali.
