He’s the man behind the stellar homes of celebrities from Hrithik Roshan to Jacqueline Fernandez. And now, celebrity architect Ashiesh Shah takes inspiration from Wabi Sabi, a serene Japanese aesthetic that is also the collection’s namesake, for Urban Ladder’s latest launch.
Blending local materials like teak and cane with faux leather accents, Ashiesh creates a minimalistic line of the basics: chairs, sofas and tables. Brass rods replace wood in the cylindrical Bethak Arm chair while rearranged grains of wood form the Mej Dining Table.
“The Wabi Sabi is a Japanese philosophy that works with different cultures in different ways, and I’ve used it in my own way. We’ve designed these pieces to be part art, part crafts and part material. This collection highlights natural materials. For example, it uses open grain polish rather than a glossy finish polish, to show the grains of natural wood,” Ashiesh says, about his interpretation of the Wabi Sabi ideology.
The designer reveals that he will be designing three more collections for Urban Ladder, but we wouldn’t wait to start shopping.
