Reimagining spaces with Villeroy & Boch

Villeroy & Boch group reintroduces bathrooms as an open living space

BY

A bathroom for the longest time has been just what it’s called. A purely functional space tucked to the corner of a room, often an afterthought in the grander scale of design. Now, a fundamental shift is redefining the way we think about these intimate spaces. Homeowners want natural light, soft colours and natural materials, ultimately wanting spaces that let us breathe, let us linger and truly unwind. It is this shift that Villeroy & Boch are shedding light on: presenting bathrooms as an open living space with clever architectural design and sustainability at their core.

Villeroy & Boch’s approach in creating a bathroom presentation lies in the profound understanding of modern living’s paradoxes. Digitalisation has reached its peak, with people interacting way less. The need for an experience that rejuvenates our senses heightens at the comforts of our home. This inspired designers Christian Haas, Gesa Hansen and Roberto Palomba to create their bathroom presentation, emphasising textures and natural materials.

AS SIMPLE AS IT IS

Unlike the harsh whites and extreme contrasts of minimalist bathrooms, this monochrome palette in earthy mid-tones produces smooth transitions throughout the room. What results is an inviting atmosphere, both modern and enduring yet sophisticated and down-to-earth. This design demonstrates that restraint does not equate to creating chill, and simplicity can be incredibly deep in its emotional resonance.

The concept of luxury is being redefined with a focus on aesthetics that reflect durability, quality and sustainability rather than passing fads. “The most important trend is the shift away from trends towards things that last,” says Christian, emphasising materials, workmanship and functionality that prove their worth in everyday life.

FUNCTIONAL AND HAPPY

In an era in which excess can easily pretend to be luxury, these designers suggest that the truest luxury may be a room that knows precisely what it is supposed to be, and has the assurance to be nothing else. Their bathrooms don’t advertise themselves; they provide simple rooms in which one can reflect, regenerate and just enjoy the experience of being in a well-made room.

This approach envisions a larger change in the way we perceive the connection between design and happiness. With our world growing more complicated and demanding, the environments we spend time in every day become even more important to our emotional and mental well-being. Villeroy & Boch’s vision elevates the bathroom from a utilitarian necessity to a daily ritual of self-pampering, demonstrating that even the most intimate moments of our lives can be given a loving, beautiful design.
