Japanese ingenuity meets pops of colour in a Gujarat bungalow by P&D Associates

Creating and assembling a home to its best identity is often a process that brims with endless possibilities. To break the monotony or to play with colours. To encapsulate timeless aesthetics or to endow the space with a mix of maximal and minimal adornments. However, at this bungalow in Ankleshwar, Gujarat, creatives Devang Patel and Pratik Siddhpura of P&D Associates chose to embrace a multitude of design possibilities. Imagining an expansive 5,160 sq ft home, they crafted the canvas to fit the needs and whims of a nuclear family of three.
“The size of the property challenged us to think creatively. We wanted to create a home that felt luxurious yet compact and spacious. By drawing inspiration from Japanese architecture, we achieved a design that is functional, elegant, and deeply personal to the family,” explained principal designers Devang and Pratik.
Glimpses of green, grey and blue
Entrenched in luminosity, the high ceilings and full-height windows establish a strong presence indoors, complemented with pops of navy and sky blue against tones of grey, congregating with a cherry red console placed next to the modern metal and wood staircase. The dining room and kitchen are draped with sage green. Through upholstered chairs and sturdy cabinets, this shade is the focal point around every corner of the home.
The family wanted the feeling of repose and visual delight to continue for years down the line, and the bungalow evokes similar sentiments in the ways colours, materials, patterns and decor intersect with each other effortlessly. The rooms are designed to evoke a sense of tranquillity. Clean design and refined choices, all bedecked in grey become a comfortable space within a home that is already a retreat. Tones of grey and beige sweep across the home, while the secondary palette features vivid hues that bring the home to life.
Timeless and personal
“We opted for a clean facade with a mix of wooden louvres, aluminium C-sections and glass. These materials are complemented by an extended slab, adding a layer of dynamism to the structure. Slender aluminium sections create a second layer on the projecting facade, making the house appear light and contemporary,” the duo state.
Curated Japanese artworks add an eclectic ardour to the space, whilst plush and practical material choices embody comfortable living. Japanese principles form the basis for the creation of this family home dotted with hints of subtle opulence — never compromising on its timeless appeal and function throughout.
