Like postcards neatly placed in a tin box, this 4,000 sq ft apartment in Bengaluru designed by Weespaces holds the memories of the homeowners’ travels – from the cobbled lanes of London to the sun-dappled streets of Madras, finally anchored in Bengaluru

Creamy whites, soft taupes and greys along with olives and black accents, paint a picture that melds the warmth of a traditional Chettinad home with the grandeur of an English mansion. “One of our favourite elements that stand out in the home is how it was imagined in a classic English inspired persona but with a calm minimal grace that serves as a canvas for a wide range of art, antiques and collectibles that truly tell the story of this home,” awes Vinithra Amarnathan of Weespaces.

Where art meets everyday life

“They were keen on creating a home for their family of four and a pet that could reflect an elevated, coming of age feel that combines all their past experiences and present interests and personalities,” shares Vinithra.

The apartment opens into a grand foyer, here Victorian inspired patterned tile floors coupled with the wainscoting that lines the walls and a staircase make you feel as though you’ve stepped into an old railway bungalow. By the console rest two Thota Vaikuntam sketches add a touch of vernacular vibrance and charm to the foyer. A framed wall leads you into the living and dining area, each space meant for quiet comfort. In the formal living room, four upholstered club chairs form a snug conversational circle, for family gatherings, around a leather-tufted ottoman that doubles as a coffee table – perfect for sitting back with a cup of filter kapi. Behind the scene is an oversized textile art frame that anchors the room.

The living space feels grounded because of its rich warm walnut wood flooring that beautifully contrasts the taupe walls. There is quite an ease to the dining area that lies towards the left, with touches of teak wood, cane and sisal the space has a natural warmth to it.

Tucked ahead of the dining area, the kitchen in its sage green guessing evolves the earthiness of fresh herbs. The soft shade of the cabinetry wraps the room in a soothing embrace, while the central island, flanked by Windsor bar chairs, beckons for moments of leisurely tea sips.

Personalised spaces, tucked upstairs

The teak wood stairs, framed by wainscoted walls and a sleek black metal railing guide you to the intimate quarters of the home. The family’s central lounge where a large sectional sofa adds a pop of blue creates a space for the family and their four legged friend to gather together for movie nights, nearby in the sofa is a gold-toned wire chair that glimmers in soft light.

On either side of the lounge are the sons’ bedrooms reflecting their unique personalities: the younger’s room is a pared-back space with soft grey hues and a simple upholstered bed, the older’s equally striking as the former was laid-back leather-strapped bed and warm wood accents.  Across the way, the master bedroom opens to a charming balcony decked in soft green floral tiles — almost as if the outdoors had been invited inside.

Of routes and roots

The past and present meet with delicate grace in this home. Rooted in the warmth of Madras, touched with the elegance of London and now fully grounded in Bengaluru, it tells the story of the family’s past while adapting to their present lives. The English influence is undeniable, with Victorian-inspired tile floors setting the stage in the foyer, while wainscoting and floor-to-ceiling moulding, hallmarks of classic English design, offer a timeless elegance. The heart of the home echoes traditionality — Thota Vaikuntam sketches on the walls, a handmade carved wood bar cabinet and a teak wood dining table with cane-back chairs.
