From crafting quintessential Parisian abodes, Pierre Hermé bakery, the L’Occitane concept store, and almost half a dozen Cartier stores, Paris-based architect Laura Gonzalez has done it all. At 37, she continues to stamp her glammed-up mix and match style not just on the French capital but all around the world on a whole host of restaurants, bars, hotels and stores.
This year, she adds another feather to her cap while bagging the Designer of the Year September 2019 title by MASON&OBJET. The latest edition of the anticipated event dedicated to the biggest trends in interior design remains to be one of the most calendar-marked highlights of the interior and design professionals as they flock to the city to seek out the newest and innovative interior styles for the coming year.
“I feel that spaces need to have their own soul,” says Gonzalez. The acclaimed designer, alumni of the ParisMalaquais School of Architecture knows how to infuse spaces with her personality, these include—classicism and fantasy that one may often find in her projects— updating classical references with a generous helping of her rampant yet well-tamed imagination.
Experimenting with diverse fabrics, motifs, materials, colours and eras—the bold young architect, truly has found her unique signature style. “I love adding a plethora of details, ensuring there’s always something of interest, no matter where the gaze falls,” she explains. Currently, she is dabbling multiple projects— from renovating a mansion in the Vexin to create what she calls a “living showroom,” to also working on her brand new furniture range, featuring sofas, lights and tables. “My furniture is very “me” – everything is bespoke, you can choose the colour of a chair, combine an endless number of fabrics on a fireside chair…”
The pieces in the collection will sit alongside one-off creations designed hand-in-hand with craftsmen, such as an onyx backgammon table and an obsidian lamp.
