New Weaves: Rooshad Shroff’s carpets for Cocoon Fine Rugs

Last Saturday, luxury carpet brand Cocoon Fine Rugs launched Tessellations, a limited edition series of rugs by multidisciplinary architect and designer Rooshad Shroff. The event was held at Mumbai’s Le Mill in association with ELLE DECOR India.
The seven carpets take cues from traditional flooring of heritage buildings that always fascinated Rooshad. Morphing patterns from one shape to another, he filled them with a sophisticated palette of bright colours. In each rug, hypnotic designs blend with Cocoon’s use of the finest combinations of wool, all hand woven to completion.
Rooshad had started working on this line a few months before he met with Ayush Choudhary of Cocoon Fine Rugs. His approach towards it was two folds: He wanted to experiment with technology to create new, unique patterns and secondly, he was taken by the idea of using floor covering patterns for rugs.
Talking about his first range of carpets, Rooshad discloses, “There were a couple of influences that went into this including heritage flooring from world over with geometric, Moorish and Islamic patterns. Taking off from MC Escher’s technique, I took simple shapes like an octagon or a star and morphed and merged them into each other using different transformation.”
