To initiate new dialogue between art, architecture, interiors and visual arts, FCML Design Initiative (FCDI) founded by Abhinav Khandelwal, FCML’s MD, hoped to stimulate, challenge and facilitate an environment of exchange and collaboration. As a part of this initiative, the India Arch Dialogue, curated by New Delhi based architect Verendra Wakhloo at India Design ID 2016, featured architectural exhibits, presentations, dialogues and a model show.
“It all started with the idea of displaying models of creative and dedicated architects from in and outside Delhi for public viewing. A dream, that most probably all architects share. Abhinav Khandelwal shares a common vision of developing an exhibition on architecture in line with the Venice Biennale, sometime in the future,” avers Verendra.
At India Design ID 2016, FCDI’s booth in the New Decoration pavilion was created like a meshed box. Architectural models by different architects were organised along a zinc mesh, made of 8mm diameter TOR steel and welded to create a blurred square. This was also used as a base for displaying multiple information panels and TV screens that told stories about the models.
“This kaleidoscopic arrangement is corresponding to the diversity of our cities. The visitors could opt to circumambulate around the entire box and enjoy views of the internal spaces,” adds Verendra.
The architectural models on display were namely Gregory Reaves’s The Habitat of the Future, Kengo Kuma’s The Iiyama Cultural Hall Nachura, Steven Holl’s Mumbai City Museum North Wing, Toyo Ito’s National Taichung Theater, Bijoy Jain’s Tazias, Fernando Menis’ Hatching, The Origin of a City, Langarita-Navarro’s Pelt & Medialab-Prado, Madrid and Robbrecht en Daem’s Ghent Market Hall.
The India Arch Dialogue, which took place on February 12 and 13, 2016 at India Design ID, touched over a variety of topics, all based on the participating architects’ models presented at the booth. These discussions facilitated exchange of ideas and provided food for thought to attending delegates.Website: www.fcdi.co.in
