The Budapest Café—a whimsical detour to a world reimagined with minty interiors and pops of pink
MAY 13, 2019 | By Sakshi Rai
A space designed by Studio Biasol to escape the buzzing city life, The Budapest Café in Chengdu, China, teleports you to a whimsical land built to detail and perfection. Withholding creative bends and surprising design features at every corner, this curious little cafe is an architectural delight, encouraging customers to go beyond and explore. Inspired by Wes Anderson’s distinctive visual style- symmetry with elements of quirk along with vivid, nostalgic colour palettes, and Melbourne’s café culture, it makes for a relaxed and indulgent atmosphere, sought out by most.
Playfully themed with a pink ball pool, neon signages, bathrooms with speckled pink terrazzo and, best of all, an original Eero Aarnio Bubble chair, the cafe is designed to evoke a spirit of femininity and fun. Contradictory to its light, pastel interiors, the facade stands tall and bold with a grand arch, making for a striking entrance. Once inside, symmetrical arches frame recessed seating and shelving, better seen from a mezzanine level providing a top view of the entire cafe. A long marble bar, majestic in its simplicity and the minimalistic fireplace are demonstrations of subtle opulence amidst a real-life artwork. This modern, refreshing space pushes beyond the ordinary, giving an exciting twist to the conventional approach to cafe design.
