Mustard Design Studio subdues Scandinavian Design in this Mumbai home

Embodying subdued Scandinavian style, this 1,500 sq ft Mumbai home overlooking the Powai Lake is a paradigm of sublime design. 

Curated by Hiral Shah, principal designer of Mustard Design Studio, the house explores elegance through nordic bohemian construction as their root source of inspiration. A linear theme is illustrated in diverse design patterns and textures replicated throughout the residence, finished with a touch of styling by Spaces and Stories.

Exacting a period of 10 months from the stages of planning to execution, the project portrays the firm’s primary philosophy of reflecting the owner’s personality meticulously by fusing quirk in a classic design. 

A classic palette of nudes and sombre tones with an added splash of colours breaks away from the monotony. Accent finishes such as exposed brick, veneer, Italian marbles and more top off the material mood board. 

With the keywords minimalism and functionality in mind, the homestead accents marble as an architectural design detail. 

Greeting the observer upon entrance is a wide passage leading to a lavish living-cum-dining room. An unconventional V-shaped layout, which was also the designer’s biggest challenge while fashioning the home now serves as the standout segment. 

A triangular balcony in the centre of the floorplan with the living room on one side and an adjacent dining section features windows that imbue the space in plenty of light. 

Decked thoughtfully with catalogued decor including nominal furniture and neutral fabrics with tonal pops, the living area maintains a spacious panorama. Contemporary abstract artworks accent the wall and operate as a buffer between the facade and furniture. 

A chic and charming dining area with rich Italian marble and a grand dining table embrace the home’s dignified design. Panelled glass doors open up the kitchen to the living room area, unifying the space with the plan of the living room. 

The designer’s favourite space- the daughter’s bedroom, reflects the girl’s personality. The room features a boho-contemporary aesthetic with stunning linear wall panelling that camouflages the bathroom door. The sleek style incorporated is meant to imitate piano keys, resonating with the daughter’s affection for the instrument. 

Blush pink walls contrast black and white monochromatic tiles in the en-suite bathroom to maintain a consistent bohemian theme. 

Conjointly doubling as a guest bedroom when required, the son’s room opts for simple Scandinavian spirited decor with neat linear patterns. The room also accommodates a desk space essential for any member of the family working from home. 

What resulted in being the ultimate a la mode bathroom the Design Studio has ever done, is the en-suite powder room. Sheathed in Terrazzo stone from Kalinga, the choice of marble complements the vertical subways of the bathroom adding to the home’s linear look. A vertical pattern is adapted on the storage cabinets as well, persisting a consistency in the visual language of the project. 

Crafted throughout the master suite in a vast variety of forms and textures is the homogeneous linear pattern. Along with carefully designed panelling, similar to the daughter’s bedroom camouflages the en-suite bathroom door, the bedroom also includes a wall-mounted television set. 

The chamber and its bath, both emanate an elegant milieu by garnering features like Italian marble and straight lines in its makeup. A designful splash of colour delivers a subtly distinct aesthetic to each bedroom, that mirrors the house’s principal visual device. 

The designer’s primal ambition was to present the family with a home that was as ravishing as it was refined. “Essentially, they wanted the kind of cosy house that everyone dreams about, but one that was also classy enough to stand out,” shares Shah on her design theory for the project.
