#EDExclusive: Paul Matter collaborates with couturier Kallol Datta for a series of lights
Founded in 2016, New Delhi based contemporary light design studio and atelier Paul Matter is famed for showcasing master craftsmanship from India by revisiting iconic motifs to create its own distinctive decorative lights. In tandem with this credo and to celebrate their second year in the industry, the brand joins forces with avant garde designer Kallol Datta for a mini series of illuminators.
Titled Overlay and Underlay, “the limited edition collection explores different approaches to light design, that blend the traditional and the experimental, form and function, detail and benign,” reveals founder of the label Nikhil Paul. Comprising a ceiling pendant, floor lamp and limited edition light objects, the line started with the idea of drafting a pattern on paper for a garment with free flowing 3D folds and arresting these fabric folds in metal. The duo later created the cutting edge with LED technology by fusing sculptural forms with hand worn materials.
Handcrafted in beaten and casted metal by using age old techniques such as patina and burning, the lights exude contemporary, industrial uniqueness.
