#EDDesignerFind: Forma for Alessi by Zaha Hadid Design

by Nupur Ashok Sarvaiya Mar 03, 2017

Continuing the collaborative legacy that Zaha Hadid shared with Alessi, the iconic Iraqi architect designed last her product for the Italian brand, the Forma grater. Like many of Hadidian architectural works, the grater is inspired by natural forms that have been smoothed over time by water and by the wind.

Consisting of two elements – a sculptural black base holding a mirror-polished stainless steel grater – Forma has an ergonomic shape designed to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand. A pattern of asymmetrical holes allows for the cheese to be grated and sprinkled unevenly, giving a unique texture to any dish.

The grater is paired with a stand creating an overall sculptural centrepiece; from rock to grater, this piece is both playful yet functional.  The product perfectly represents the 2004 Pritzker Prize winner’s visionary design, which absorbed ideas from the visual arts and processed them into small, tabletop works of architecture.
