Chinar Farooqui: EDIDA India 2015 Bedroom winner
As a young girl, she often travelled to villages in Rajasthan with her mother. Handmade cloth and attires of rural folks had a deep impact on Chinar Farooqui. Soon after her Masters in Textile Design at National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, she founded a clothing and soft furnishing label Injiri that translates to real India.
Talking about her EDIDA India 2015 Bedroom winning range, Chinar says, “The Asmani collection are developed using Bhujodi weaving technique with locally grown organic cotton in Kachchh. As a textile designer I feel privileged to be able to support the artisans with my work. And at the same time the artisans have helped me in realising my dream of working closely with the regional technique.” These weavers used to weave unstitched garments like headgears, skirts, dhotis and more. Chinar uses their existing vocabulary to create sophisticated linen in refined and minimal aesthetic. She makes basic designs on paper and leaves most of the final decision making at the loom stage.
Talking about her recent EDIDA India 2015 Bedroom category win, the creative avers, “In fact it has come to be me as a big surprise since all this while I thought my work was not noticed as I have been so quiet about it. But I was wrong! And I feel extremely privileged…it is a matter of great pride to be selected by ELLE DECOR.”
